Geography Should Not Help Determine Indigenous Status: Qalipu Chief – VOCM

The Chief of the Qalipu Mi’Kmaq First Nation says geography should not be a determining factor when it comes to Indigenous status.

Brendan Mitchell was responding to the adoption of an updated founding members list that includes 5,000 new members, but will see 10,000 others removed by August 31st.

The link to 67 accepted Indigenous communities has been a bone of contention for many Qalipu applicants. In some cases, members of the same family have had their band status removed simply because they moved for work or school.

Chief Mitchell says that unfairly affects many, including those in military service or the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.
