Premier Ball Releases Mining the Future 2030 – A Plan for Growth in the Newfoundland and Labrador Mining Industry

November 2, 2018

The Honourable Dwight Ball, Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador, today released Mining the Future 2030. An initiative of The Way Forward, this industry development plan was created through collaboration with Mining Industry NL, with the goal of strategically positioning Newfoundland and Labrador as a globally competitive, top tier jurisdiction for mineral exploration and development.

The Premier was joined by the Honourable Siobhan Coady, Minister of Natural Resources, Graham Letto, Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources, Heather Bruce-Veitch, Chair, Board of Directors Mining Industry NL, and a number of industry representatives for the announcement.

By 2030, the Provincial Government envisions:

  • Five new mines;
  • Sustainable direct employment of more than 6,200 people in operations;
  • Doubling annual exploration expenditures to $100 million (or at least 5 per cent of Canadian total);
  • $4 billion in annual mineral shipments (or at least 10 per cent of the Canadian total);
  • A workforce that is more diverse and includes a minimum of 30 per cent women – double the current level;
  • Ensuring the province is consistently ranked as a top three Canadian jurisdiction in permitting times; and
  • Ensuring the province is consistently ranked overall as a top three Canadian jurisdiction by industry.

To be successful, the plan recognizes four areas of focus for future actions:

  • Being competitive, with clear and efficient regulatory processes;
  • Advancing targeted public geoscience, marketing and education;
  • Promoting effective Indigenous and community engagement; and
  • Pursuing innovation and emerging technologies.

In addition to achieving goals mutually set by government and the provincial mining industry, Mining the Future 2030 strategically positions Newfoundland and Labrador to avail of opportunities under the developing Canadian Minerals and Metals Plan.

Mining the Future 2030 also delivers on commitments in The Way Forward to strengthen the province’s economic foundation. The Way Forward outlines all actions the Provincial Government is taking to achieve a strong, diversified province with a high standard of living, and can be viewed at

“The world needs minerals as they form the very basis of modern life – basically, everything we use is either grown or mined. Our geology positions Newfoundland and Labrador to be a global supplier of minerals, particularly while advancing a green economy, and the environmental extremes we work in give us valuable expertise to share with the world. Great potential exists for us to further this industry throughout our province, and I look forward to continuing our approach to growing the economy in ways that create bright futures for our residents.”
Honourable Dwight Ball
Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador

“Mining in Newfoundland and Labrador is a key contributor to the economic growth and employment in our province. This plan supports prospecting, exploration and development of the industry. We have the opportunity to increase mineral exploration expenditures, mineral shipments, revenues and jobs. Our goal is to be consistently ranked as a leading Canadian jurisdiction.”
Honourable Siobhan Coady
Minister of Natural Resources

“I can tell you first hand of the benefits the mining industry provides to families and communities in our province, particularly our rural areas. As the Parliament Secretary for Natural Resources and the MHA for Labrador West, I welcome this announcement and look forward to working to help implement the new mineral strategy.”
Graham Letto
Parliamentary Secretary for Natural Resources

“Mining Industry NL is fully supportive of the progressive measures outlined in this strategy to ensure that the mineral industry in our province is competitive, innovative and clearly focused on future growth. Today is an important first step towards a long-term vision of sustainable development and opportunity for our member companies, the mining industry of the province and the people of Newfoundland & Labrador.”
Heather Bruce-Veitch
Chair, Board of Directors Mining Industry NL
